Our Focus is on Personal Injury
Alan, Amy and Mark have spent their combined 100+ years in the legal profession representing persons injured by the negligence of others. In 1975, Alan Sylvester formed one of Vermont’s oldest and most successful personal injury law firms. In 1992, Amy Sylvester Averill joined the firm after practicing for several years in Boston, Massachusetts at Morrison, Mahoney and Miller. In 2016, Mark Sylvester, formerly of the Florida based personal injury law firm, Leesfield Scolaro, joined the firm to continue his successful personal injury practice in his home state. Since 1981, their offices have been located in the historic downtown district of Burlington, Vermont, in close proximity to the state and federal courts. Our attorneys are admitted to practice in state and federal courts in Vermont, Florida and Massachusetts.
The experience and excellence of the lawyers at The Sylvester Law Firm is reflected in the success they have had representing injured individuals, and the recognition they have received. We have been successful in recovering by jury verdict and settlement sums ranging from $1 Million to $5.4 Million on 20 occasions. The jury verdicts include the highest Wrongful Death award in the United States District Court, and the highest Recreational Accident award in Vermont Superior Court. In 2015, we recovered over $1.2 million dollars on behalf of victims of medical malpractice.
Both Attorney Alan Sylvester and Attorney Amy Sylvester Averill have received the highest rating of AV Preeminent from Martindale-Hubbell for ethical standards and legal ability. Lawyers who receive the AV Preeminent status have been awarded the highest peer review rating for their professional excellence. Our lawyers are consistently ranked among New England’s Best Lawyers by Best Lawyers in America® in the fields of personal injury litigation.
Our lawyers have held positions in a number of professional organizations, including President of the Chittenden County Bar Association, and President and Members of the Board of Governor’s of the State Trial Lawyers’ Association. We have also served on a number of professional organizations, including the Judicial Nominating Committee, Board of Bar Examiners, the Professional Conduct Committee, and several committees relating to protecting the rights of injured victims.
At The Sylvester Law Firm, we offer a free case evaluation. We also represent clients on a contingency fee basis so you do not pay legal fees until we have successfully resolved your claim.
We represent individuals who have been injured throughout Vermont as well as Vermont residents who have been injured out of state.
The Sylvester Law Firm provides referral fees to referring attorneys within the statutes and ethical guidelines of their respective states and jurisdictions. Many attorneys refer cases to us for a variety of reasons, including cases that arise in areas where we have demonstrated a history of success, cases that require extensive commitment of time and resources, and cases that present complex or unusual legal issues.
We regularly represent out-of-state residents who are in Vermont, traveling through, vacationing, attending college, or who have received medical treatment at one of the many institutions in Vermont.
